Just as World War II was ending in May of 1944, the Crimean Tatars were deported to Central Asia by Stalin, accused of collaborating with the Nazis. It was the start of a long exile for the Turkish-speaking Muslims who had reigned over the Ukrainian peninsula. The fall of the Soviet Union allowed them to return to their native land.
