After parlaying an animation position into a full-blown directing gig on the strength of wildly inventive movies like Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice, Burton went from being a creative enfant terrible to slowly becoming a Hollywood hack. Batman and Edward Scissorhands were genre-defining masterpieces, while Ed Wood lured us into the cross-dressing world of its titular director. Virtually everything since has been a regurgitation of Burton's visual style, applied to various existing properties. Mars Attacks and Sleepy Hollow are tepid interpretations of superior source material, and later efforts like Planet of the Apes and Alice in Wonderland are candy-colored misfires that do more to insult their audiences rather than entertain. And while Big Fish marks a late-period renaissance for Burton, it's the exception in a career trajectory that's ever spiraling downwards. Let's hope Burton finds his way again with this year's Big Eyes, a biopic about painter Margaret Keane.
