At any time of the year Mimurotoji has spectacular floral displays, especially its azaleas, hydrangeas and lotus blossoms, which is why it is known as the ‘Flower Temple.’ Situated on Mt. Myojo above the rapids of the Uji River, the beautifully manicured gardens cascade down the hillside to the river. The temple has long been associated with the literary world of the Heian era because parts of the Tale of Genji are situated in Uji. It is even said that this is where the fictional character Ukifune is buried!
