The Mumbai police has said yesterday (Thursday) that they were investigating the alleged diesel mafia kingpin Mohammed Ali in connection with the murder of the senior journalist Mr. J. Dey.Mohammed Ali, who is being treated at the Nair Hospital now, is in the judicial custody for the charges of being involved in an organised crime syndicate.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Mr. Himanshu Roy told the reporters in Mumbai that a special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised the Crime Act granted Crime Branch permission to interrogate Mohammed Ali on Wednesday.Mumbai Commissioner of Police Mr. Arup Patnaik said that “We interrogated him on Thursday. There is an obvious possibility of a motive [to eliminate someone who wrote about diesel smuggling],”.

Mr. Himanshu Roy said that they had considered all the possible motives. “We are examining them all and trying to eliminate them one by one.” On the possibility of the red sandalwood smugglers being involved in the murder, Mr. Arup Patnaik said the police had not ruled out anything. He denied that the name of Jafar Kasim popped up during the time of investigation.
