A bus strike is announced in Kerala on February 17, 2011.  The Kerala State Private Bus Owners Federation, a coordination committee consisting of six organizations has decided six charters.

K.Thrivikraman, President of federation and P.K. Pavithran, General Secretary of the federation announced the press persons on 15th February, 2011 that the State council has decided to go ahead with the strike.

The federation has demanded the State Governments to revise the fare of students. The second demand was to grant concessions to the industries in proportion to the benefits enjoyed by the students. The third demand was to fix the minimum charge at Rs.5 and fare per km at 65 paisa.

The next demand was to formulate a new transport policy that supports both the private and public sector transport system. The fifth demand was to withdraw the steps taken by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation that has affected the private bus services.

The council announced that the prices of the diesel and spare parts had increased by 50 percent. The wages of the workers has also gone up. This has led to an increase in the bus fare.

A.K. Abdulla, President of The Kerala State Private Bus Operators’ Federation announced the press that the Fare Revision Committee appointed by the Government was making in its work following the demand for fare revision issued by the federation in July-August 2010.

Mr. Abdulla has stated the ongoing strike was not fair as the committee has already collected evidence from the bus operators as well as the Students union and was to submit an interim report to the Government.
