or Many Americans have been trying to shake off the economic gloom, flocking to major stores overnight for the traditional 'Black Friday' sales. Some stores opened at midnight, earlier than usual in a bid to attract post-Thanksgiving bargain hunters for what is seen as the traditional beginning of the US Christmas shopping season. A third of all consumers are predicted to shop today; more than 150 million Americans are expected to hit the stores this weekend.
